Besides the unmistakable American hamburger, Brazilians have produced their own variant of America's favorite meal, simply calling it "X".
Its name comes from cheeseburger, which, influenced by the country's native language, Portuguese, became solely known as "X", and pronounced sheeez. This is generally due to the way they are prepared, with nominal meats, vegetables and cheeses used. Sandwiches are usually two slices of bread, mayo, some cheese and some meat. Sandwiches aren't the only type of snack available though!
A petite pastel, pao-de-queijo, or a croquete (ground beef breaded and deep fried) are common possibilities as well. Some Brazilians even have sandwiches for dinner, which is always a considerably smaller meal for most Brazilians.
Sandwiches can also be the Sao Paulo “Beirute” and the Southern Brazil “X-burger”. The latter is bigger than a regular cheeseburger and may also be filled with a variety of meats, from chicken, to beef, to pork, and even chicken hearts! Cheeseburger derives from the way Brazilians pronounce “cheese”, which evolved into the shortened version “X” (sheeez). The Beirute is a much larger sandwich. This sandwich is toasted and also much larger than a regular X-burger. It has a Arab influence, as the name “Beirute” suggests.
