Besides the obvious American hamburger, Brazilians have produced their own version of America's popular meal, simply calling it "X".
Its name originates from cheeseburger, which, influenced by the country's native language, Portuguese, became solely known as "X", and pronounced sheeez. The X-burger is generally much bigger than any burger from well-known fast-food chains around the world. You can choose almost any meat to be in the X-burger, include chicken steak, fish steak, chicken hearts, beef steak, strogonoff, various barbecued meats, lamb steak, or even a vegetarian variety. X-burgers include a deep-fried egg, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, straw fries, mayonnaise, mustard, catchup, onions, corn, peas, and much more. It is usually said that it is very challenging to finish a X-burger in one sitting! It is clearly a twist on the typical American variety cheese burger.
Sandwiches are the most popular type of snack in Brazil. While sandwiches are normally a complete dinner in North America, they are thought of as a light snack in Brazil. This is generally due to the way they are prepared, with minimal meats, vegetables and cheeses used. They are usually two slices of bread, mayo, cheese and some meat. Sandwiches aren't the only type of snack available though!
A little pastel, pao-de-queijo, or a croquete (ground beef breaded and deep fried) are common options as well. Some people even have sandwiches for dinner, which is always a smaller meal for most Brazilians.
Sandwiches can also be the Sao Paulo “Beirute” and the Southern Brazil “X-burger”. The latter is larger than a regular cheeseburger and may also be filled with a variety of meats, from chicken, to beef, to pork, and even chicken hearts! Hamburgers comes from the way Brazilians pronounce “cheese”, which evolved into the short hand version “X” (sheeez). The Beirute is a much larger sandwich. This sandwich is toasted and also much larger than a regular hamburger. It has a Arab influence, as the name “Beirute” alludes to.
