Northeast Brazilian The Northeast area of Brazil, principally the states of Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, and Sergipe, comprises geographically of a thin, fecund coastal plain with abundant rainfall where a great deal of the population is found, an similarly thin transition zone referred to as the Agreste, and a big semi-arid section titled the Sertão, which is dominated by large cattle ranches. In the rest of the coastal plains there is less African impact on the food, however seafood, shellfish, coconut and tropical fruit are menu staples. Frequently enjoyed tropical fruits in the North-eastern region feature mango, papaya, guava, orange, passion fruit, pineapple, sweet sop, "hog-plum," sour sop, and cashew (both the fruit and the nut). In general, however, most northeastern states shall use tapioca flour and sun-dried beef (carne de sol). Shrimp and fish are also really in demand and cheap. Another feature of northeastern food is the amount. Often, the meals are really giving, and a dish can supply two to three people. Several of the favorites from this cuisine are “moqueca de peixe”, acaraje’, vatapa’, tapioca com coco e leite condensado, cashew juice, acerola juice, acai.
Sandwiches are the preferred type of snack in Brazil. While sandwiches are usually a complete meal in North America, they are considered a light snack in Brazil. This is generally due to the way they are prepared, with very little meats, vegetables and cheeses used. They are usually two slices of bread, mayo, some cheese and limited meat. Sandwiches aren't the only type of snack available though!
A small pastel, pao-de-queijo, or a croquete (ground beef breaded and deep fried) are common possibilities as well. Some Brazilians even have sandwiches for dinner, which is always a smaller meal for most Brazilians.
Sandwiches can also be the Sao Paulo “Beirute” and the Southern Brazil “X-burger”. The latter is much bigger than a regular cheeseburger and may also be filled with a variety of meats, from chicken, to beef, to pork, and even chicken hearts! The Name cheeseburger comes from the way Brazilians pronounce “cheese”, which evolved into the abbreviation “X” (sheeez). The Beirute is a much bigger sandwich. This sandwich is toasted and also much larger than a regular X-burger. It has a Arab influence, as the name “Beirute” alludes to.
