Forte Santa Bárbara
The Fort was built in the second half of the eighteenth century with bricks and stones on a rocky islet near the beach. But in the early twentieth century involved the landfill island, linking it to the island of Santa Catarina.
The fort was intended to prevent the passage of pirates through the channel of the Straits and protect the ancient town of Nossa Senhora do Desterro. Due to its location, right in the center of the capital, has become an obstacle to the modernizing city, is about to be demolished.
Representatives of the city prevented the overthrow of Forte, who in 1840 was transformed into a Military Hospital. In 1874, its construction was remodeled to serve as headquarters for the Port of Santa Catarina, which was installed in 1875. In 1984, the fort and its area of 5086 square meters were listed as National Historic and Artistic Heritage. Owned by the Navy of Brazil, the Fort was transferred to Santa Barbara City of Florianopolis in July 2000 after negotiations with the Command of the 5th Naval District.
The transfer of the property involved in return to build the new headquarters of the Port Authority, which until 1998 was housed in the fort and was transferred to the mainland.
The fort currently houses the Santa Barbara Foundation Cascaes Franklin, a cultural house.
