Besides the unmistakable American hamburger, Brazilians have produced their own version of America's popular meal, simply calling it "X".
Its name comes from cheeseburger, which, heavily influenced by the country's native language, Portuguese, became only known as "X", and pronounced sheeez. The X-burger is typically bigger than any burger from well-known fast-food chains around the world. You can select virtually any meat to be in the X-burger, include chicken steak, fish steak, chicken hearts, beef steak, strogonoff, various barbecued meats, lamb steak, or even a vegetarian variety. X-burgers include a deep-fried egg, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, straw fries, mayonnaise, mustard, catchup, onions, corn, peas, and much more. It is often said that it is very challenging to complete a X-burger in one sitting! It is definitely a twist on the typical American variety cheese burger.
Sandwiches are the preferred type of snack in Brazil. While sandwiches are generally a complete meal in North America, they are thought of as a light snack in Brazil. This is primarily due to the way they are prepared, with nominal meats, vegetables and cheeses used. They are usually two slices of bread, mayo, some cheese and limited meat. Sandwiches aren't the only type of snack available though!
A little pastel, pao-de-queijo, or a croquete (ground beef breaded and deep fried) are common options as well. Some Brazilians even have sandwiches for dinner, which is always a minimal meal for most Brazilians.
Sandwiches can also be the Sao Paulo “Beirute” and the Southern Brazil “X-burger”. The latter is larger than a regular cheeseburger and may also be filled with a variety of meats, from chicken, to beef, to pork, and even chicken hearts! Hamburgers comes from the way Brazilians pronounce “cheese”, which evolved into the shortened version “X” (sheeez). The Beirute is a bigger sandwich. This sandwich is toasted and also much larger than a regular hamburger or cheeseburger. It has a Arab influence, as the name “Beirute” suggests.
