Besides the obvious American hamburger, Brazilians have made their own variant of America's favorite meal, simply calling it "X".
The name comes from cheeseburger, which, influenced by the country's native language, Portuguese, became simply known as "X", and pronounced sheeez. The X-burger is typically much larger than any burger from well-known fast-food chains around the world. One can choose virtually any meat to be in the X-burger, include chicken steak, fish steak, chicken hearts, beef steak, strogonoff, various barbecued meats, lamb steak, or even a vegetarian variety. X-burgers feature a deep-fried egg, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, straw fries, mayonnaise, mustard, catchup, onions, corn, peas, and much more. It is usually said that it is very challenging to complete a X-burger in one sitting! It is clearly a twist on the typical American variety hamburger.
Sandwiches are the preferred type of snack in Brazil. While sandwiches are generally a meal in North America, they are regarded as a light snack in Brazil. This is basically due to the way they are prepared, with very little meats, vegetables and cheeses used. Sandwiches are usually two slices of bread, mayo, some cheese and meat. Sandwiches aren't the only type of snack available though!
A petite pastel, pao-de-queijo, or a croquete (ground beef breaded and deep fried) are common options as well. Some Brazilians even have sandwiches for dinner, which is always a smaller meal for most Brazilians.
Sandwiches can also be the Sao Paulo “Beirute” and the Southern Brazil “X-burger”. The latter is much bigger than a regular cheeseburger and may also be filled with a variety of meats, from chicken, to beef, to pork, and even chicken hearts! The name comes from the way Brazilians pronounce “cheese”, which evolved into the short hand version “X” (sheeez). The Beirute is a bigger sandwich. This sandwich is toasted and also much larger than a regular X-burger. It has a Arab influence, as the name “Beirute” implies.
