Besides the obvious American hamburger, Brazilians have crafted their own version of America's popular meal, simply calling it "X".
Its name originates from cheeseburger, which, heavily influenced by the country's native language, Portuguese, became only known as "X", and pronounced sheeez. The X-burger is commonly much bigger than any burger from well-known fast-food chains around the world. One can select pretty much any meat to be in the X-burger, include chicken steak, fish steak, chicken hearts, beef steak, strogonoff, various barbecued meats, lamb steak, or even a vegetarian variety. X-burgers feature a deep-fried egg, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, straw fries, mayonnaise, mustard, catchup, onions, corn, peas, and much more. It is commonly said that it is very hard to complete a X-burger in one sitting! It is undoubtedly a twist on the typical American variety hamburger.
Sandwiches are the most popular type of snack in Brazil. While sandwiches are commonly a complete lunch in North America, they are considered a light snack in Brazil. This is primarily due to the way they are prepared, with very little meats, vegetables and cheeses used. Sandwiches are usually two slices of bread, mayo, a little cheese and limited meat. A little pastel, pao-de-queijo, or a croquete (ground beef breaded and deep fried) are common possibilities as well. Some people even have sandwiches for dinner, which is always a smaller meal for most Brazilians.
Sandwiches can also be the Sao Paulo “Beirute” and the Southern Brazil “X-burger”. The latter is much larger than a regular cheeseburger and may also be filled with a variety of meats, from chicken, to beef, to pork, and even chicken hearts! The name comes from the way Brazilians pronounce “cheese”, which evolved into the abbreviation “X” (sheeez). The Beirute is a much bigger sandwich. This sandwich is toasted and also much larger than a regular hamburger. It has a Arab influence, as the name “Beirute” implies.
