Praça da Sé

For three centuries, the temple built in 1553 was an important place of religious practices for the local people of Bahia. In 1933, however, to meet the needs of urbanization of the city, the old cathedral was demolished to gave way to a tram-train line. In 1940, a public transport terminal was inaugurated in the site.

In 1982, with the opening of another major terminal, Terminal Lapa, the Cathedral region entered in the process of degradation. In 1992, the Cathedral Square became part of a revitalization project of Salvador entire historic center.

In 1999, as part of celebrations of the 450th Year Anniversary founding of the city, it opened a new Cathedral Square, where the Belvedere, with the monument of "Fallen Cross", is the highlight, as the site offers a vision of a beautiful sunset  overlooking the Bay of All Saints.

During excavations for the reform of the square, were found the ruins of the ancient Cathedral, transformed into the archaeological site.  The Catedral da Sé  in Salvador - Bahia, is situated midway between two tourist attractions - from one side to the Municipal Square with the Lacerda Elevator (10618) and across the Terreiro of Jesus (10619) and the area of ​​Pelourinho itself.
