Pierre Verger Gallery

The Pierre Verger Gallery, a member of the Cultural Complex Library of Barris, is administered by the State Government of Bahia, through the Department of Visual Arts at the Cultural Foundation of the State of Bahia. Because of its location, has received, on average, an audience of three to four thousand people each exhibit, which lasts about a month.

Created with the aim of encouraging the improvement and photographic production in Bahia, was inaugurated on March 23, 1998, with an exhibition of French photographer and anthropologist Pierre Verger Fatumbi, composed in black and white, among which some hitherto unpublished. Employees on assignment guidelines, the gallery hosts exhibitions, book launches and facilities related to the area of ​​visual arts, becoming a reference as open space to photographic production in Salvador.

Currently, the Department of Visual Arts follows the search for partnerships with other institutions in order to offer the community of Bahia producing national and international photographic exhibitions on display through the Pierre Verger Gallery.

Who was Pierre Verger

Pierre Verger was born in Paris on November 4, 1902 and died in February 1996. In 1932 he learned the craft of photography and traveled the world for almost 14 consecutive years working as a photographer. Upon landing in Bahia, Verger was seduced by the hospitality and cultural richness that has just met and settled permanently in the capital. Blacks who lived here were, and characters of his photos, his friends, whose lives Verger sought to know in detail. When he became aware of Candomblé, he became a scholar of worship deities, fetching its revival in Africa, named after Fatumbi, "born again thanks to Ifa" in 1953.

Verger created in 1988, the Pierre Verger Foundation (FPV), located in the Town America, in the neighborhood of Old Mill to sprout, which was the giver, sustainer and president, thus assuming the transformation of his own house a research center.
