Republica Museum
The Museu da República (Museum of the Republic) occupies the former Nova Friburgo Palace, also known as Palácio do Catete (Catete Palace), was the heart of the Executive Power in Brasil for 63 years. The museum opened on November 15, 1960, after Brasilia became the country new capital.
Republican seat of power between the years 1897 and 1960, the Palácio do Catete has neoclassical architecture with façade of granite and marble portals framed by pink and white marble. Several presidents lived in this beautiful and historic place. It was place for many significant events in the history of the country, as the decisions of Brazil's participation in two world wars and the suicide of President Getulio Vargas.
Transformed into a museum after the change of the Federal Capital to Brasilia, the place, with an intense cultural calendar, also counts with a library, bar, restaurant, shop and a beautiful garden, ideal for walks in the evening. The Nova Friburgo Palace, current Catete Palace, was built between 1858 and 1867 by merchant and coffee farmer Antonio Clemente Pinto, Baron of Nova Friburgo, was enshrined as a monument of great historical, architectural and artistic.
Raised in Rio de Janeiro, then the Imperial Capital, it became the symbol of the economic elite of Campinas in Brazil nineteenth century slavery. His eclectic style design is the work of foreign artists of renown, as the architect Gustav Waehneldt and painters Emil Bauch, Gaston and Mario Tassini Bragaldi.
