Day of St. Sebastian Celebrations

On January 20th, Rio celebrates the Day of St. Sebastian, patron of the city. To celebrate the date, festive processions and processions are organized by the Archdiocese.

According to the Municipal Guard, over one hundred agents acts to control the city during the procession in honor of the patron. The procession passes through the streets of Tijuca, the Center and the Glory.

Unlike other cities, Rio has its holiday on the day of the patron, not the date of its foundation - the 1st of March. For historians, this difference is due to the holiday tradition of St. Sebastian, celebrated since 1568.

The town's first church was a tribute to San Sebastian. A small chapel, where today is the Urca. This, more than 400 years.

There are many versions of why San Sebastian became the patron saint of Rio The official story is that it was a tribute to Don Sebastian, King of Portugal at the time of the founding of the city. San Sebastian would have helped to expel the French, in a Jan. 20. What no one disputes is the locals' devotion to the saint.

Besides the Catholic Church, the African religions are also gearing up to celebrate the holy day, known as Candomble in Oxossi.

St. Sebastian was born in Pretoria, in Italy, around the third century. Belonging to a Christian family, he was baptized as a child. Years later, following a military career, was named captain by the Emperor Diocletian for their loyalty and value. In the position of chief, he took advantage for better comfort when Christians denounced or condemned to death. Diocletian, Sebastian identifying as a true Christian, detained and forced to recant their faith. Without doing the will of the emperor, the saint was tied to a tree trunk and shot by arrows.

Resisting torture, he survived and the Emperor expressed his disapproval by the violence against Christians. This attitude has cost the death sentence, held a stick in the year 303.
