Guarda do Embaú Beach
Guarda do Embaú is a beach located in Palhoça, SC, Brazil, 46 km south of Florianópolis and 755 km from São Paulo. Access is made by crossing the Madre River. Its level varies and the cross is often made with water at the neck, sometimes the water is lower. But there's no need to worry, since there are many fishermen who help along the way for R$ 2 (round trip).
The beach is considered one of the best in Brazil for surfing. It has lefts that can reach 10 or 12 feet. The waves break very close to the Madre river. During high season the beach is crowded with surfers. The trick is, if you want to get rid of crowds, better going in low season. It is during the winter, too, that the waves become larger and more constant.
If you like walking there is a trail which takes visitors to the Stone of the Vulture (Pedra do Urubu) from where you have a privileged view of the paradise. The same trail reaches the Barra beach, in the north corner. A 40 minute walk in the forest, crossing rivers, leads to Zanela Waterfall, with 8 feet tall. The Maciambú waterfall is smaller. There, the river runs through the woods and form a huge lake, divided into two falls, forming another lake just below. There are chalets, pousadas, hostels, inns and other accomodations such as cabins and campsites or fishermen home for rent.
Access to Guarda do Embaú is made by the BR-101, km 242, southbound (from Florianopolis). Other access options can be made by the municipality of Santo Amaro da Imperatriz (BR 282), directly from San Jose (via inter) and south of the state (BR 101).
Guarda do Embaú beach resort is 60 Km away from the Florianópolis International Airport.
Bus: The company that makes the Florianópolis / Palhoça (Guarda) is the Paulotur, leaving the Central Terminal of Florianópolis, close to the road. The times vary from 7:00 am to 8:20 pm.
