Julio Delamare Aquatic Park
Designed by architects Rubens Cozzo, Ricardo Lemos Labre and Candide, the Julio Delamare Aquatic Park opened in September 1978 at the Maracana Complex and since then has become the stage for major sporting events of swimming, water polo, synchronized swimming and jumping ornamental. It occupies an area of 18.515m ², one of the largest of its kind in Latin America. Its name honors the sports journalist Julio Delamare, great supporter of its construction, died on July 11, 1973, a plane crash in Paris.
With an initial capacity of 5,712 seats, the park has an Olympic swimming pool, 25m x 50m, heating a swimming pool of 10m x 25m, and a tank for jumps of 25m x 25m with a maximum depth of 5 meters.
To house the water polo competitions of the Pan American Games, held in July 2007 in Rio de Janeiro, the Parque Aquático Júlio Delamare was renovated. Their seats were bleachers, which reduced the capacity for 5,000 people, but now provides more comfort and convenience to viewers. The park has six toilets to serve the public (3 females and 3 males). On May 2, 2006, the Julio Delamare Aquatic Park was reopened, and promoted the World Junior Swimming Championships, from 23 to 27 August of that year.
Today is the study of a project to transform the space in the Centre of Excellence for water sports. Currently, work in the water park for the community sports projects with swimming, water aerobics and gymnastics. Soon these activities will be expanded.
