Olinda

Olinda is a municipality in the state of Pernambuco, in Recife Metropolitan Region, with 375,559 inhabitants, [3] is one of the best preserved colonial cities in Brazil. It was the second Brazilian city to be declared Historical and Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO in 1982.

Besides its natural beauty, Olinda is also one of the most important cultural centers of Brazil. It was declared in 1982, Historical and Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
In 2005, Olinda was elected the first Brazilian Capital of Culture 2006.
It was the first time Brazil has elected a cultural capital. The project is an initiative of the organization of the Brazilian Capital of Culture (CBC), with the support of the Ministries of Culture and Tourism and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Olinda revive the splendor of its past every year during the Carnival of Olinda, the sound of Frevo, Maracatu and other original rhythms of Pernambuco. There are giant puppets, in which a man lies only in their legs to support you, and carnival (with different themes, different groups, often accompanied by orchestras of Frevo, and / or groups maracatus). It is customary for young wet passersby with water guns. Several groups also dress up, whatever the character, usually with the intention of calling attention to itself, making a social critique, encourage play with, and attract mates.
Throughout the years, especially in the historical center of Olinda, there are cultural events such as Handicraft Market, reggae, samba, Maracatu and afoxés. There are also more intimate environments, such as holiday homes, bars and restaurants cultural - with literary evenings, great food, live music etc.. Cultural symbols are also the typical food of the city and the lighthouse of Olinda tapioca.
