Arena Theatre
is located in the Upper Viaduct Otávio Rocha, Avenida Borges de Medeiros, in the Historic Center of Porto Alegre. Founded by independent theater group, then composed of Jairo Andrade, Araci Esteves, Rosa Alba, Cancio Vargas, Hamilton and Hedwig Falej Braga, was inaugurated on October 17, 1967, with part of Dias Gomes: "The Holy Survey" . The arena served as a nucleus of cultural resistance during the military dictatorship (1964-1985).
Since 1991, the Arena Theater Center houses Documentation and Research in Performing Arts. Its collection includes texts from the Censorship Department of the Federal Police, 2,100 dramas of national and foreign authors, both adults and children, performing arts books, a video library with the Living Memory Project.
The Living Memory Project - the brainchild of Dilmar Messiah at the end of the eighties - aims to organize and record on video the testimony of representative figures in the field of performing arts, thus expanding the artistic memory of Rio Grande do Sul
Theatre launches each year a notice of the INCENTIVE RESEARCH AWARD IN THEATRE THEATRE ARENA, which includes two theater groups to occupy the two halves of the year. The goal is to foster the development of research in the Arena Theatre, with the aim of space recovery, restoring and developing his character rather than research and fostering the realization of high-quality professional theater, outside of trade proposals. It also aims to develop original research into an area of three sides - according to the layout of their space groups, and they can be tested in the arena, given the amount of $ 30,000.00 (thirty thousand reais) for the realization of the project.

The Arena Theatre work flexible hours, according to the shows in theaters. And the Documentation and Research Centre in Performing Arts - Sonia Duro space is open to the interested public from Monday to Friday from 17h to 13h30mim.
