Restaurant Cervantes in Natal, RN
This type of restaurant offers the usual Brazilian barbecue - churrasco, which is composed of whole cuts of meat that are skewed and barbecued in a “churrasqueira” built of bricks. The meat is cooked and then brought to the table, in a service called a rodízio.
Passadores (meat waiters) wander around the restaurant, handling a specific cut of meat. They come to your table with a skewer and each person can then either choose to take some of the dish or pass. For the inexperienced it can become quite an overwhelming experience as skewer upon skewer is brought to the table.
Many different kinds of meat are brought around, commonly various cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken, duck, seafood, sausage, or any other local types of meats. Be sure to try out the barbecued pineapple with cinnamon and sugar!
The “churrascarias” typically supply, complimentary to the meat, an all-you-can-eat buffet. Generally, the buffet serves salads, rice, beans, and some fish stew. Often, these restaurants also offer pao-de-queijo (similar to biscuit, but with a cheese infused bread. The bread is made of tapioca flour and cheese), and deep fried banana (typical Brazilian treats). Most often they offer Brazilian desserts, such as pudim de leite (milk pudding), passion fruit mousse, quindim (a sweet treat made of egg yolk, sugar, and coconut), and brigadeiro (made of chocolate, condensed milk, eggs, and sugar). It is definitely worth saving room for dessert, if you can!
In Brazil, there are various “bares”, or “barzinhos”, (pubs, little pubs) where adults gather for happy hour to have caipirinhas, cocktails, beers and other cold drinks.
Snacks are very popular, frequently they are dependent on the local foods, but many are popular throughout Brazil. Polenta frita (fried polenta), pao-de-queijo (biscuits baked with cheese inside), salami Italiano, fried chicken wings, cod fish balls (deep fried pastry made with wheat flour, egg, and shredded cod fish), various cheeses, and olive platters.
It is quite typical for bars, called botequins, to offer cafe-com-leite (coffee with milk) served in a shot glass, plus fresh french bread with butter for breakfast. This is a fairly unusual for many people, who see pubs as a night time venue.
People usually get together in bars to watch and enjoy sports events. Typically, these are soccer matches, which happen frequently and not only during the World Cup. Brazil has soccer tournaments throughout the year, and everyone has their favorite team. It isn't unusual to see massive numbers of people wearing team jerseys.
Brazilian pubs range from very informal, lower class establishments to very formal, higher end places. Unlike most North American pubs, most of these pubs are wide open to the public with no formal entrance.
The minimum age for drinking in Brazil is 18 years old, and if you look older than 18 it is very likely you won’t be asked to show your ID. Public drinking is allowed in most cities, and public areas.
