Iranduba Town

Manaus-Iranduba bridge over Negro River, Manaus Amazon

Iranduba is the town that has the largest number of jungle lodges in the state, including the largest and most famous of all: the Ariau Amazon Towers, but no use getting excited, because unless you're a Hollywood celebrity, a tycoon who knows a European or an Arab oil sheik, we can not afford the exorbitant daily charged by these hotels. Actually, the problem is not the existence of expensive hotels and luxury, the problem is that they almost completely ignore the national middle-class tourists who would like to know the Amazon. Thus, the Amazon becomes better known by foreigners and Brazilians who are rich, while most tourists (and even their own Amazonas) are deprived of that privilege.

There are, however, plenty of hotels that are very affordable. The city also offers attractions that are affordable or even free. The main one is the beach Açutuba. Located on the banks of the Rio Negro, this beautiful white sand beach is accessible between the months of September and January, forming a long peninsula that goes over the river. Although easily accessible by a paved road, it is still unknown to the general public, which makes it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sunset sun.

Another interesting place to visit is the village of Iranduba Paricatuba. You'll enjoy the beautiful waterfall, Ariaú, but the main attractions are the ruins of an ancient house. Built as a residence of Italian immigrants and then transformed into a hospice for lepers, the site was abandoned at the beginning of last century and has since been overgrown. Several trees have sprouted in the middle of the room in the house and, impressively, their roots spread on all sides, turning the site into a setting worthy of a horror movie. The government realized the tourist potential of the site and decided to preserve it for open houses.

Finally, a boat ride on the Parana do Ariaú reveals an unexpected part of the Amazon. Navigating through this channel, which connects the Rio Negro Solimões River, you'll enjoy a wide variety of plant life which paints a beautiful backdrop of red and yellow amid the green expanse. The best time to enjoy this natural spectacle is from late August until mid-September.

Once the bridge over the Rio Negro is open, between November and December, it can be reached by car in Iranduba, direct from Manaus. It is the first city on the other side of river.

Distance from Manaus: 27 km

Getting there: Ferry, car and taxi.

On the other side of the Rio Negro, follow the road PM-070 (Estrada Manoel Urbano) that leads to the city center.

Be sure to stop by these attractions: Açutuba Paranas Beach, Ariaú Waterfall, Paricatuba Ruins. The Açutuba beach is only available to tourists between September and January. To get there, just follow AM-070 (Estrada Manoel Urbano) and turn right at Km 28, following a paved extension of 11 km that leads straight to the beach.

The flowering season begins in Parana Ariaú the last days of August and runs until the second week of September. The transfer of ferries to Iranduba is made from the Port of San Raimundo, in Manaus. For those wishing to drive there, it can take up to 5 hours. If you want to make the crossing without taking a car, the ferry crossing takes 45 minutes on average. Another option is to take the boats leaving the port of Manaus. The price is $5 per person and the crossing takes about 15 minutes. http://descobrindooamazonas2.webs.com/iranduba.htm
