Museu Histórico de Santa Catarina - Palácio Cruz e Sousa
The former Government Palace, where famous figures were born, for example, the historian Alfonso D'Escragnolle Taunay, son of Viscount Taunay is a point of emphasis during visits to the cultural heritage of historic center of Florianopolis. The Palace was visited throughout its illustrious history, as the emperors Pedro I and Dom Pedro II. It was also the scene of dramatic episode in the light of the Federalist Revolution, having been taken over in 1891. The building was remodeled during the government of Hercilio Luz, between 1894 and 1898, losing their original colonial features.
Ten allegorical statues sculpted by Italian artist Gabriel Silva decorate the exterior of the building, capping the parapets. Among them, the patron saint of the state, Santa Catarina, evocative of the sea nymph, Anfritite, and the mythological god Mercury. Inside the palace, impacts the magnificent staircase with its balustrade balconies and marble from Carrara, Italy workpieces.
Bronze statues of knights and a beautiful stained glass art-nouveau enrich the decor. The action of time, poor maintenance and the reforms without deteriorating the criterion were building during the century. XX.
In 1977 was begun the great work of restoring the building, which renamed itself in 1979, Cruz e Sousa Palace, named after the great poet from Santa Catarina. In 1984 the building is listed as historical heritage of the state and begin new works of restoration that will return the original features of the reform made by Hercílio Light in 1898. And the palace was reopened in 1986, going to host the Historical Museum of Santa Catarina.
