Fort Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Conceição built in 1742.
The Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Araçatuba was the fourth and last of the Portuguese fortresses devised by Brigadier José da Silva Paes.
Built in the Isle of Araçatuba, between the years 1742 and 1744, the fortress was the only intended to protect the entrance of the South Bay of Ilha de Santa Catarina. He also served in prison on several occasions, including in the Republican period. In 1894, a ministerial determination of August 28, this fortress, which was also called Fortaleza da Barra do Sul began to be called Fort Araçatuba.
In the original project, we highlight the main battery of guns of circular shape, located at the highest point of the set. Despite the repairs that this fortress has suffered in 1780 and 1850, was quite ruined, according to a report in 1899. The Fortress of Araçatuba was listed as National Historic and Artistic Heritage in 1980, received emergency shoring and consolidations in 1991 and is currently undergoing restoration.
Location and accessibility
The Fortress is located on the island of Araçatuba, near the Isle of Barra Sul de Santa Catarina, Municipality of Palhoça. You can reach this through the Fortaleza BR 101, access to the Beach of Dreams, or going to the end of the access Caieira da Barra do Sul, Santa Catarina Island. In both cases, there is always some boatman at hand to the crossing to Araçatuba. The island has no jetty or beach, and the landing is only possible with good weather.
