Parque Nacional de Ilha Grande
The National Park of Ilha Grande is located on the Parana River between the states of Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul. It has 78,875 hectares and was established on September 30, 1997. It is administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). The park is open free to the public for tours every day of the week. The park, at various locations, has little beaches, a place of leisure, where you can even swim in the River Paraná. Another option is the boat ride on the Parana River, passing through various localities of the Big Island.
The park is in a transition between the cerrado (characteristic of the Pantanal) and seasonal forest. Its fauna has already many endemic species and / or endangered. Among the terrestrial fauna species that were recorded there were the swamp deer (Blastocelus dichotomus), the alligator-of-crop-yellow (Caiman Latorostris), the jaguar (Panthera onca), tapir (Tapirus terestris) and anteater- flag (Myrmecophata trydoctyla). Aquatic fauna includes: painted (Pseudoplatystoma corruscans), jau (Paulicea luetkeni), armed (Pterodoras granular) (Salminus maxillosus), pacu (piractus mesopotamicus) and avifauna cites are: jabiru (Jabiru Mycteria) jaó (Cryptrellus undulatus), Crax (Crax fasciolata), American Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) and jacana (Jacana jacana). There are eight counties that comprise the island: Alton, Icaraíma, Sao Jorge do Patrocinio, Alto Paraíso e Querencia do Norte - Paraná; Mundo Novo, Eldorado, Naviraí and Itaquiraí - Mato Grosso do Sul.
There are two other very large national parks in the state of Parana, Parque Nacional de Superagüi and Parque Nacional do Iguaçu. Both are a fair distance from Curitiba, and will require additional planning to reach them.
