Parque Nacional de Superagüi

The Superagüi National Park was created in 1989 with an area of about 21,400 ha. In 1999, there was another area demarcation and increased to about 34,000 ha, which included the Island of Superagüi, Das Peças Island, Pine Island and the Island of Pinheirinho. It includes the valley of the Rio de Los Patos, on the mainland, and Varadouro Canal, which separates the island from the continental land Superagüi.

 

The National Park is part of the complex of Paranaguá estuary, Canaanite and Iguape. In 1991, the park was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, since under the viewpoint of a dietary supplement is one of the most important areas of the country. More recently, in December 1999, the park was also declared Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO as well. Harbors bays, beaches, reefs, mangroves and abundant formations of the Atlantic Forest. Several animal species, some of them rare or endangered species such as red-topped parrot (Amazona rhodocorytha) and the parrot-purple-faced (Amazona brasiliensis), the lion tamarin, the black guy (Leontopithecus caissara) and alligator chat-of-yellow (Caiman latirostris), live within the boundaries.

 

The park does not have an organized tourist infrastructure, nor is there a management plan. Only the village of Barra Superagüi is outside the park boundaries and there are eight lodges, four restaurants and a camping. There is no liner, being necessary to charter private boats to reach the site. The tourist demand is still relatively small, but due to the installation of electricity at the end of 1998 and the park's proximity to two major cities - Sao Paulo and Curitiba - it is likely that demand will increase considerably in the near future, which becomes an urgent program of tourism planning. It is administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).

 

There are two other very large national parks in the state of Parana, Parque Nacional de Ilha Grande and Parque Nacional do Iguaçu.  Both are a fair distance from Curitiba, and will require additional planning to reach them.
