Palácio do Itamaraty
The Itamaraty Palace [1], also known as Palace of the Arches, and the attachments were designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. The Palace was inaugurated on April 21, 1970. It was the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when the beginnings of Brasilia. Currently, three buildings comprise the headquarters of the Ministry: the Palace, the Annex I and Annex II, popularly known as "Wedding Cake". The Palace has the largest hall without pillars of the world, with an area of 2,800 m ².
Palace of the Arches was the first name given to the building due to the arches of the facade. However, the tradition of the name Foreign Ministry was stronger and the Palace followed by calling Itamaraty Palace. Inside, features panels of artists such as Athos Bulcão, Rubem Valentim, Sérgio Camargo, Maria Martins and fresco of Alfredo Volpi. The internal and external landscaping by Roberto Burle Marx. In front of the Palace of the Foreign Ministry, on the water surface, is Meteor sculpture, designed by Bruno Giorgi.
The cornerstone of the palace was released on September 12, 1960, however this was not actually completed and opened in 1970, due to technical difficulties to meet the design innovations.Also known as the “Arches Palace”, the Itamarati Palace holds a wide variety of artworks and antiques. Guided visits are available daily from 2 to 4:30 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 3:30 pm. It is located in the Ministries Plateau. Information: +55 (61) 411-6148.
