SESC Pompéia Cultural Center in São Paulo

The SESC Pompéia is a center of culture and leisure in São Paulo, which includes theaters, sports courts, swimming pool, snack bar, restaurant, exhibition spaces, beer hall, workshops and free internet, among other services. Its architectural design was developed by the architect Lina Bo Bardi in 1977. When visiting the Drum Factory, where it deployed the SESC (1977), the architect Lina Bo Bardi, found a beautiful building, made ​​in Brazil with structure pioneer of reinforced concrete with masonry fences. What most caught the attention of the architect, however, was the space over the weekend was populated by families with young children playing and having fun. The old factory, built from imported technology and sophisticated for its time, would, for the architect to be reinvented.

 

The SESC Pompeia project proposes to maintain the free space of the building, but suggests catalytic activity and vitality of the place: the functions of the old structure would be redesigned and manufacturing technology project would be converted into a modern design. In any case, the popular uses captured by Lina would be maintained and permeated by water features, cafeterias, libraries, works of art, etc.. For the ground could hold the whole program planned for the SESC Pompéiai, with the option of keeping the old factory, it would be necessary to build two towers at the end of the lot. Decision adopted by the architect and also gave monumental aspect to the complex.

 

The project embodies the SESC Pompéia internal street factory turning it into a stage for spontaneous demonstrations or presentations scheduled. The street, downhill, runs through the cultural program and service, and leads the visitor to a more reserved, especially that houses the spa and sports program. Within the plot there is a meeting of "ways" of pedestrians: the main street with the street built on the Black Water Creek. With these situations Lina behind the urban environment into the building.
