Most  famous beach in Salvador, Itapuã Beach is actually used on a postcard.  Beyond the lighthouse, there are green waters, rocks, palm trees, natural pools and white sand.  Stalls serving snacks, cold beverages and fruits from the region are all available.

Even if you've never heard of  this beach, there is a good chance you've heard the lyrics of Vinicius de Moraes and Toquinho which have a famous song about the love this beach, the beauty of the beach and the tranquility of this beach.   It is definitely the best known beach in Salvador.

Historically, the name, Itapuã comes from the Tupi Indians and mean snoring stone, and this rock makes snoring noises during low tides.   The area was settled and a small village formed which was primarily for whaling.   In the area is a lagoon aptly named Itapuã, which is a famous place for leaving offerings to Oshun.
