Elevador Lacerda
This fun attraction features a total of four elevators, which can transport up to 128 people on each trip, and reamins operational 24-hours a day. It's open daily and there is no cost associated with taking the trip up top where it's possible to get a great view of the city and ocean.
Created in 1868 by a wealthy local businessman, Antonio Francisco de Lacerda, the very stylish Elevador Lacerda is rather art deco in its appearance, with strong and elegant lines. The history of Elevador Lacerda actually goes back over 400 years to when the Jesuits installed a simple rope and pulley system. When the rope and pulley system was replaced with the current incarnation, the elevators in Elevador Lacerda where powered by steam engines a great step up from the ropes and those were replaced in 1928 when electric motors. Nearby attractions are also plentiful, including the 17th-century Camara Municipal (City Hall).
