MAST - Museum of Astronomy in Rio de Janeiro
Museu de Astronomia e Ciencias Afins (MAST) is an institution with multiple functions. Established in 1985 in Rio de Janeiro as a government entity, its mission encompasses the history of science and technology in Brazil and the fostering and study of science education and communication.
MAST is a research center under the auspices of the Brazilian Ministry for Science and Technology, carrying out academic research into the History of Science, Science Education and the preservation of documental and museological collections. These activities generate the production of new knowledge, and the professionals at MAST also organize congresses and seminars and prepare publications and databases.
As a museum, MAST is responsible for safeguarding collections of instruments, artifacts and documents concerning science activities in Brazil. The museum's collection is housed in the main building and its adjoining premises.
In 1986, both the buildings and the museological collection were listed by IPHAN, the Brazilian institute for national heritage. The museum is responsible for the preservation of the historical collections, including research, restoration, management and conservation activities. It has purpose-built laboratories for conserving and restoring paper and conserving scientific instruments.
Additionally, training and specialization courses are provided by the museum staff, who also publish technical standards and guidelines for documental collections. Some of the projects are conducted in partnership with other museums and research institutions. MAST's science education and communication activities are many and varied. Its collection is on display in the museum's permanent exhibition, and its library and video library are also open to the public. It puts on events such as its Sunday Special and Night Sky Observation, as well as temporary exhibitions. It also receives touring projects and holds programs geared towards schools, which include guided tours for groups of students and training courses for teachers.
