It stands out for popular devotion, widespread in almost every country, and the original location, on a cliff high enough and pure rock, causing it to be seen from miles away. It was built in 1635, as simple and rustic chapel, by Captain Baltazar de Abreu Cardoso, on land they own. In 1728, the brotherhood was transformed into Venerable Brotherhood of Our Lady of Penha de France. Works were made for the expansion, especially the staircase, to give more security to those who climb the huge rock. Today object of legend and place of payment of pledges, the now famous open staircase has 382 steps in the rock alive and there are devotees who climb on their knees in penance. The church interior denotes simplicity, having only one altar in the chancel where the statue of the patron. In the background you can see the ancient altar of the chapel with the first image of Our Lady of the Rosary. The temple has two towers with bells coming from Portugal. Currently the church is the center of major festivals, especially in the month of October, dedicated to the devotion of the saint.
