Estado de Pernambuco Museum
The Pernambuco State Museum can be found in one of the most significant architectonic examples of the XIX century, a beautiful stately home in Graças neighborhood, residence of Augusto Frederico, the son of Beberibe’s Baron. The Museum is guardian of an important part of Pernambuco’s history. Throughout its 80 year existence, the Museum, created in 1929, has showcased an ample and varied heritage that constitutes a remarkable referential of the State’s history. The institution is one of the cultural highlights of the State Government managed by Fundação do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico de Pernambuco - Fundarpe. Currently the Museum exhibits more than 14 thousand items, uniting important collections that are distributed in the following categories: Archeology, Indigenous Culture, Dutch presence in Pernambuco, Sacred Art, Afro-Brazilian Culture, Ex-Votos, Iconography, Furniture, Porcelain, Crystals and Painting, with Canvas Paintings of artists such as Cícero Dias, Telles Júnior, Francisco Brennand and Burle Max. The Pernambuco State Museum embraces, besides the Estácio Coimbra Stately Home – an XIX century mansion, Annex 1 - the Espaço Cícero Dias with capacity to house medium and large scale expositions and Annex II - a venue where art courses and workshops are undertaken. On the ground floor of the Espaço Cícero Dias, inaugurated in 2003, the long lasting exposition “A legacy revisited”, exhibits various samples of historical patrimony under the curatorship of Emanoel Araújo, as well as the Joaquim Cardozo auditorium, where lectures, workshops, debates and other cultural events are held. The upper floor, among the galleries of temporary expositions, houses the Cícero Dias Documentation Center – a library specializing in Art and History with more than 4 thousand volumes including books, catalogs and periodicals, some of them rare editions, such as Gaspar Barlaeus’ book, written in Latin, which narrates the history of Maurício de Nassau in Pernambuco.
