Carmo Beach & Fortim do Queijo

Privileged by its location, Praia do Carmo stands out by its proximity to the historical site of Olinda. Following the characteristics of the edges of the city of Olinda, Carmo Beach also has installed several artificial reefs.  It has an impressive stretch of sand, enabling visitors a great place to swim, and some stalls and kiosks.   Locals and visitors come here because it's guaranteed to be enjoyable.  The view from the beach is of calm ocean waters, with many anchored boats where fishermen are preparing to go to work with a nce breeze coming in from the Atlantic.


You can still see the old fort of San Francisco, built by Christopher Alvares in the seventeenth century.  Due to repeated attacks during the Dutch colonization, the fort lost its way and became known as a bastion of the Fortim do Queijo or Fort of Cheese.  Visitors strolling along the beach are often distracted by the views of this ancient fortification.  Along the long and steep climb up to the for, you will find several guns and much of its structure well preserved.

 

On the banks of the Carmo coast, visitors will encounter several buildings listed by the Institute for National Artistic and Historical Heritage.   The Praça João Pessoa, Cine Olinda was built in the 1930's is part of the beach promenade and also where several city tours being.   The beach is roughly 7 km from Olinda.
