Basilica and Convent of Our Lady of Mount Caramel
The Basilica and Convent have a very long history, dating back over four hundred years. The first Carmelite friars arrived in Brazil in 1580, from Portugal and in 1584. With the foundation of the first convent in Olinda, the first Brazilian festival in honor of Our Lady of Mount Caramel was started. This festival is still popular and celebrated even today.
In 1654 the Order of Mount Caramel was established in Recife and in 1665, Captain Diogo Vasconcelos Cavalcanti started the construction of the Basilica. Building at his expense, the Basilica and Chapel were built without a proper royal license, which was only granted on March 8, 1687. In the same year, the Palace of Boa Vista, built by Maurice of Nassau, was donated to the Order to be integrated into the complex of the Basilica and Convent. The temple was completed nearly one hundred years later in 1767. The nearby church is the Convento do Carmo, where Friar Mug made his religious vows and was the ordained priest, and where presumably, he is buried.
In 1909 the Virgin of Carmen was proclaimed patroness of Recife, and on September 21, 1919 was crowned. In 1917 the church was added to the Basilica of St. Peter in Vaticano, and in 1922 was elevated to the status of Basilica. The Basilica and Convent of Carmo were turned over on October 5th, 1938 to the Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN).
The buildings and festival are extremely old, with a rich and complex history that is beautiful and awe inspiring to see. Knowing that these building are nearly fourth hundred years old and some of the first built in Recife makes them wondrous and extremely interesting to visit.
