Festa de Santos Reis

Feast of Three Kings takes place during the first week of each year from Jan 1st to Jan 6th in the neighborhood of Santos Reis.  The festival is religious in nature and coordinated by the Church and the Community Council, with the support of the City of Natal.  The program consists of massses, novenas, processions, presentations of folklore, concert with local bands and kiosks with typical food and beverages.

Officially celebrated on January 6, the Holy Kings Day is celebrated in the Catholic Church as the Feast of the Epiphany in allusion to the meeting of the Magi to the newborn Christ child. The festivities surrounding the date are concentrated in the Archdiocesan Shrine of Holy Kings, in the neighborhood of Archdiocesan Shrine of Holy Kings, located in the East of side of Natal.

The Feast of Kings is a traditional Portuguese celebration , which arrived in Brazil in the mid-eighteenth century.  The party in Portugal was actually less religios in nature, however Brazilians treated the festival with a more religious aspect and it actually became more popular and famous in Brazil.  The images of the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Magi arrived from Portugal around 1755, at the request of Dom José I, for the existing chapel in the Forte dos Reis Magos.  The first feast was celebrated in Forte dos Reis Magos, on January 6, 1599.

The Epiphany is considered a holiday in the city of Natal, and extends for approximately ten days.
