Barra de Maxaranguape Beach in Natal

Along the north coast, this beach is known for its very festival carnival parties, famous handicraft work and for its fishing.   Barra de Maxaranguape Beach is located in the city of Maxaranguape north of Natal and roughly 45 km from downtown Natal.

 

Barra de Maxaranguape  is a quiet place nestled between the ocean and the river Maxaranguape.  The beach is protected from waves by a magnificent stretch of sand and surrounded by coconut trees named "Ponta da Barra."  Where the river meets the ocean, there are calm waters which are great for swimming and bathing in.   The calm waters are also a result of the formation of reefs roughly 4 km out, and accessible by boat.

 

The area is known for its crafts, which include embroidery work, baskets, and fishing nets, along with traditional crafts the city maintains many of it folkloric traditions.   The city have a beautiful square where people meet and is generally very relaxing.  The exception to this, is during carnival when things really taking off.

 

The community maintains its fishing traditions with a large fleet of vessels, and the fishing industry is one of the most important in the region.  The ships are sheltered in the southern part where the river meets with the sea.

 

Directions: BR101, then right toward Muriú. In Muriú go north for 9 km.
