Birdwatching in the Rainforest, Amazon

It's where the Uirapuru sings. Thanks to its biodiversity, the Amazon provides an excellent location and is among the more popular destinations for bird watchers. No wonder. Of the 9,700 bird species already cataloged in the world, about 3,100 are in South America. Of those, more than 1,600 species are in Brazil and around 750 in the state of Amazonas, which represents 47% of the total.

Birding is organized by specialized firms and are led by experienced guides. The excursion offers hiking in the forest, depending on the season. The trip includes a motorized canoe along the lakes and flooded forests. You'll see graceful, exotic birds such as macaws, toucans, parrots, parakeets, ariramba-tailed-green, dwarf woodpecker-the-valley, gypsy, heron, egret, ariramba chickpeas, yellow, rust-Woodcreeper and Anambé-painted pipira-blue-winged macaw guaçu. Besides the observation of species in their natural habitat, you'll also enjoy the wonderful singing of the nightingale along the Rio Negro.

The riverwalk at Island Marchantaria begins with the 7:30 pickup in downtown hotels, the boat trip from the ferry at 8 behind the Municipal Market Adolpho Lisboa, and pickup at 8:30 in the Tropical Oceano Praia Hotel. You'll head out to the "meeting of rivers, " one of the most beautiful mysteries of nature, where the rivers form the Amazon. The tour continues to Janauari Lake to see the famous lilac, Vitoria Amazon. You'll take a canoe ride to see the birds in this world of creeks and flooded forest. The trip will continue up the river to Solimões Marchantaria island, where it will be another canoe ride on the lakes and flooded areas to observe the impressive number of birds.

Return is to Manaus with arrival at approximately 8pm

Cost is $375 per person.
