Capela do Pobre Diabo

The neighborhood of Cachoeirinha in Manaus, holds many stories since its colonization. One is the origin of the chapel of the Poor Devil Borba located on the street (old square Floriano Peixoto). It is said that in 1882, a Portuguese citizen named Jose Antonio da Costa, who owns a grocery store down the street from City Center Installation, ordered a tablet depicting a man clad in rags and below that reads: "The poor devil" . As he was greedy for money and always said he did not sell on credit for being a poor marketer, the population decided to dub him a "poor devil. "

In 1897, Antonio home with Cordolina Rosa de Viterbo and took up residence near the square Floriano Peixoto and where they set up a fun house. Sometime, Antonio became ill leaving his grieving wife. Devout San Antonio made a promise to the saint asking for the healing of her husband, if he got well, have them build a chapel in honor of the saint. Established health of her husband, paid Cordolina sending the promise to build the chapel which is still known by the population as "Chapel of the Poor Devil. " The church contains an average of 20 people. Although being the last century, no one knows the date of its inauguration.

The closest date is November 28, 1897. In the administration of Arthur Reis, the Legislature approved the State Law No. 8 of June 28, 1965, authorizing the government to consider the church of Santo Antonio as part of the historic monument of the city and district Cachoeirinha. She remains constantly closed, and eventually opened to tourists and the celebrations of the Santo Antonio.
