Besides the unmistakable American hamburger, Brazilians have crafted their own variant of America's beloved meal, simply calling it "X".
Its name originates from cheeseburger, which, influenced by the country's native language, Portuguese, became only known as "X", and pronounced sheeez. The X-burger is commonly much bigger than any burger from well-known fast-food chains around the world. One can select almost any meat to be in the X-burger, include chicken steak, fish steak, chicken hearts, beef steak, strogonoff, various barbecued meats, lamb steak, or even vegetarian. X-burgers come with a deep-fried egg, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, straw fries, mayonnaise, mustard, catchup, onions, corn, peas, and much more. It is often said that it is very hard to complete a X-burger in one sitting! It is clearly a twist on the typical American variety cheese burger.
Sandwiches are the most popular type of snack in Brazil. While sandwiches are generally a complete lunch in North America, they are thought of as a light snack in Brazil. This is basically due to the way they are prepared, with very little meats, vegetables and cheeses used. Sandwiches are usually two slices of bread, mayo, cheese and limited meat. A petite pastel, pao-de-queijo, or a croquete (ground beef breaded and deep fried) are common possibilities as well. Some people even have sandwiches for dinner, which is always a considerably smaller meal for most Brazilians.

The latter is larger than a regular cheeseburger and may also be filled with a variety of meats, from chicken, to beef, to pork, and even chicken hearts! The Name cheeseburger comes from the way Brazilians pronounce “cheese”, which evolved into the abbreviation “X” (sheeez). The Beirute is a bigger sandwich. This sandwich is toasted and also much larger than a regular hamburger. It has a Arab influence, as the name “Beirute” suggests.
