Pirenópolis in Goiania
Pirenópolis is a nice little historic town, founded in 1727 by the Pioneers. It is 150 km and 130 km from Brasilia to Goiania. Its attractions are the historic buildings of colonial architecture, the many beautiful waterfalls and traditional festivals. Among the colonial buildings stand out from the Church of Our Lady Mother of the Rosary, the oldest in the state of Goias, built between 1728 and 1732. The waterfalls, numbering over twenty, are located within 15 km from the city. We consider two must-see waterfalls: Lázaro and Santa Maria (also known as Cachoeira do Inferno), both located in the same private property, the Vargem Grande Ecological Reserve. Among the popular festivals, there is the Festa do Divino 12067 - Feast of the Holy Spirit, which takes place 45 days after Easter. The party, with its "cavalhadas", is considered one of the greatest folkloric attractions in South America. Also, there is the Pilgrimage to the Mountain of the Pyrenees, in the first week of July. Other historic buildings, besides the Church, are the Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, 1750; Museum and the Church of Our Lady of Mount Caramel; Pirenópolis Theater in 1899, the House of Direita Street, 1852; and Babylon Farm with a beautiful colonial house. Pirenópolis is listed by the National Historic Landmark. The Sanctuary Vagafogo, 6 km from the city, is a site that hosts a large variety of birds and wild animals. It's worth a visit. The city has been called Minas de Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Meia Ponte. "Half Bridge" because half of its bridge (the River of Souls) was carried by a flood. Pirenópolis was renamed in 1890 for its location between two large hills that form the mountains of the Pyrenees. Incidentally, another tourist spot is just the central peak of the Pyrenees, with 1385 meters high, and that is only 18 km. The city is nicknamed "Piri", and is often erroneously called "Pirinopolis." Admission is charged, usually in the range R$5,00 to R$ 15,00 per person. http://www.infobrasilia.com.br/pirenopolis.htm#links
