Fortaleza has a rich and diverse past that spans over four hundred years. The Portuguese, and Dutch fought many wars for dominance, settled many of these area, and built much of the original infrastructure that allowed traders and settlers to prosper. Forts were built for protection, light houses were erected to help guide ships away from the dangerous coasts and cities like Fortaleza were built where there was the best access to the many natural resources that lay hidden away within the continent. Even if you're not that interested in the history of the city, you will be surrounded by it and will encounter many historical buildings where ever you travels lead you.
