Barra do Ceará Beach in Fortaleza
Tourists are attracted to the area to see the ruins of the Fort of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres which is partly buried by sand dunes now, but still a historic fort from the 1600's when the Dutch and Portuguese first arrived. The sands are soft and the water clear with reefs and jetties just off shore. It is roughly eight kilometers from downtown and unfortunately unfit for bathing due to pollution in the area. This doesn't stop people from visiting the beach, which has a very nice stretch of sandy beach to either relax on or stroll down.
