Naufragados Beach in Floripa
Praia dos Naufragados is located 43 km from the city center of Florianópolis, in southern Santa Catarina. A trail roughly 1 mile long separates the beach road from where there are waterfalls and ruins of a flour mill.
On the beach there is the Lighthouse and the remains of three cannons that served to protect the bay from invaders.
It would be hard to imagine all this belligerence on a beach so quiet, starting with the difficulty of access. There are three ways to reach the beach. The longest journey is from the Solidão Beach, through Saquinho and then a long way through the hillside and the mountain, which can total up to four hours walking. Another way is to go in one of the boats leaving from Caieira da Barra do Sul. This transport takes about 10 minutes and is usually used to go back for visitors who, before walking to the beach, schedule with a boatmen who work there.
The most widely used, however, is the sting that comes also from Caieira da Barra do Sul, near the small beach of “Seu Norberto”. It is a path that starts with a slight steep slope, but mostly it's almost flat, with plenty of shade and not too challenging, totaling about an hour's walk. Several roads are dirt and can be slippery, especially in the days following rainfall. In some places there are streams and ruins of old flour mills that were there. As the beach gets closer, a few houses of residents starts popping up.
The beach cove is a 1.5 km long, covered with fine white sand, framed by two rocky cliffs and lapped by a crystalline sea of blue-green water, with waves ranging from moderate to strong as the tides and winds. If that was not enough to make an irresistible invitation to swim in the sea, the visitor who accepts it also has the company of schools of tiny fish that are not bashful about to swim close to the sand.
Cove, cliffs, islands, hills, channel and fish. With all these conditions, it was inevitable that the place becomes a colony of fishing and that's exactly what happened. There still operates one of the oldest settlements on the island, founded over 200 years.
