Built in 1740, with the task of defending the North Bay of the island of Santa Catarina, along with the Fortress Anhatomirim and Fortaleza de Santo Antonio, the Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa had in the XVIII century, three batteries of cannons armed with 31 pieces of artillery. Those three Fortress controlled craft that reached the coastline of Santa Catarina, which was halfway between the port of Rio de Janeiro (Viceroyalty) and Blessed Sacrament Colony in Prata river. The Fortress of San Jose is located in a privileged position with excellent view of the North Bay, with one end between the beaches of Pontal and Jurerê. Its architecture is rich in constructive elements, distributed in three installments bulldoze.

The construction is the only fort where the chapel stands between the other buildings. At 200 meters east of Fort St. Joseph was built in 1765 the São Caetano Battery, with six cannons, seeking to garnish Jurerê and Canasvieiras beaches that were unprotected. The São Caetano battery and the Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa form one of the most beautiful sceneries of the island of Santa Catarina. The Fortress was listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage in 1938, restored in 1992 when it started having its management under the direction of the Federal University of Santa Catarina.

The Fortress of San Jose is located in Praia do Forte, in the District of Canasvieiras north of Santa Catarina Island and 25 km from downtown Florianopolis.
