A trip underground in the midst of natural beauty is guaranteed adventure for visitors to Gruta (cave) de Maquiné located in Cordisburgo city, 120 km from Belo Horizonte.

The cave, discovered in 1825 by farmer Joaquim Maria Maquiné, it is considered the cradle of Brazilian paleontology and has seven rooms with beautiful architectural forms, sculpted by water over thousands of years of work.

The scientific exploration of the site was conducted by the Danish Peter Wilhelm Lund, almost a decade after the discovery on the farm of your machine. He made pilgrimages to Velhas River basin in search of species of animals and plants.

During two years of research, the botanist and zoologist discovered human remains and prehistoric animals originating in the Quaternary period, which corresponds to the Cenozoic Era of geologic time. Among them, fossilized skeletons of birds with curves of up to three meters.

The Cave of Maquiné hosts over 650 meters, beautiful natural sculptures and stalactites of various shapes on the ceiling of the cave.

The area open to visitors, with approximately 400 meters long, is strategically lit to enhance the pictures drawn by time. The tour of the cave is made safe by walkways and is accompanied by a local guide.

The halls and galleries enchant and provoke the imagination of tourists. In the Hall of the Bear and the Elephant, for example, a large mushroom resembles the shape of the explosion of an atomic bomb. In the Gallery of Fairies, you can find sparkling crystals, like tassels, garlands and chandeliers.

How to get to the Cave of Maquiné part of Belo Horizonte:
You have to follow the BR-040, Sete Lagoas way, staying on the highway to the access to MG-231. The cave is located at km 7.

Every day from 9h to 17h.

Entry
Admission is free only for children under five years, accompanied by their parents. Children 6 to 12 years, students with student card and seniors over 60 pay half-price.
