Museu de Arte Sacra - Belém do Pará

Sacred Art Museum of Para

The Museum of Sacred Art is made by the Church of St. Alexander and former bishop's palace (originally the College of St. Alexander). The two buildings were constructed to form a set in which the church was the center radiator, as example of Jesuit architecture in Brazil. The church construction began around 1698 and opened in March 21, 1719.

It consists of nave, transept and eight side chapels. The sacristy is located in the left arm of the ship. The decor is characterized by Baroque art, with a strong tropical accent , highlighting the parts produced by the Jesuits and the Indians. In addition to the liturgical function, the church also functions as a space for scenic-musical theater and recitals, in addition to museum object, being part of the sightseeing tour of the museum.

The Pará Museum of Sacred Art is composed by images dating from the 18th and 19th centuries and liturgical objects, adding about 320 exhibits on the first floor of the episcopal palace and the church body.
