Solar da Marquesa
The building of the Solar da Marquesa, in the city center of São Paulo, is a great relic of the eighteenth century, considered an example of urban architecture of the time. Dona Maria Domitilla de Castro Mello, the Marchioness of Santos known, made history in the country as a lover of the Emperor Dom Pedro I and the history of Sao Paulo in 1834 by buying this great aristocratic mansion in the heart of the city.
The period in which she occupied the site was marked by soirées and masked balls. The building, which now houses the headquarters of the Museum of São Paulo (10376), was known and still remembered by the many cigarettes that Dona Maria Domitilla used to smoke while standing at the window.
Visitors to the Solar da Marquesa, can find housewares, some furniture and even the bathtub used by Marchesa. After her death in 1867, the site was modified and gained a more neoclassical balcony, which characterizes it today. Visitors can check out even a large iconographic collection, which includes negatives and photographs of the old São Paulo.
Solar da Marquesa is located adjacent to the Pateo do Collegio (11935). Be sure to check it is a journey into the past of the country and the capital city.
