Samba is probably the most well known Brazilian rythm, but it isn't the only one. There are several different kinds of music all over the country, varying a lot from state to state. Along with modern musical genres of music, there are many distinict styles of music to explore in Brazil.  Up in the northeast there are axe music and forro. The shouthern states have something similar to country music, called Gaucho music (musica tradicionalista gaucha). Throughout Brazil, pagode, musica sertaneja, Brazilian pop rock and Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) are very popular. Below there are some suggestions of Brazilian Music Collections, singers, and bands in each category.

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Music writer and singer, Jobim is  internationally famous for his interpretation of Girl from Ipanema (Garota de Ipanema), which he performed with Frank Sinatra. Video

 

Maria Rita - She's a new face in the MPB/Samba environment, and has been considered, from her very first album, a prodigy. She's also Elis Regina's daughter, considered one of Brazil's most (if not the most) legendary vocalists. Video

 

Ivete Sangalo - She is famous for her axe music from the northeast. Her songs range from carnival rythms to love ballads and pop. Video


Daniela Mercury - also known for her axe music, Daniela started her career in the northeast (where axe music comes from). She combines african rythms like batuque and olodum rythms. Video

 

 

Titãs- rock band from Sao Paulo that started in the 1980's. Very popular in South America. Video

 

Marisa Monte - Her Brazilian popular music is one of the best ones out there. She released her first album in 1989 and hasn't stopped since. Her exquisite voice is pleasant and touching.Video

 

Paralamas do Sucesso - With 12 albums released in Brazil and two in Argentina, this band is considered, by most people, the most successful Brazilian rock band. Their music mixes reggae, ska, samba, you name it, with rock-and-roll. Video
