Cinemateca Brasileira
The Brazilian Cinema emerged from the creation of the Film Club of São Paulo in 1940. Its founders were young students of the Philosophy of the USP, including, Paulo Emilio Salles Gomes, Decio de Almeida Prado and Antonio Candido de Mello e Souza. The Club was closed by the police during the Estado Novo.
Its historic buildings, opened in the nineteenth century, were listed by Condephaat - Council of Defense of the Historical, Artistic, Archaeological and Tourism of the State of São Paulo, and restored by the entity.
The first room Cinematheque was inaugurated on 10 March 1989, the space where the Cine Fiametta worked on the street Fradique Coutinho, in Pinheiros. The movie poster was The Passion of Joan of Arc by Carl Dreyer. For eight years, more than 200 000 people attended the various retrospective organized by the Society of Friends of the Cinematheque, often made up of unpublished works.
The Cinematheque / Petrobras Room, headquarters of the institution, has a capacity for 108 spectators. It has equipment for film projection in sizes 16mm, 35mm, silent format (1:1,33) to CinemaScope (1:2,35) going through the academy formats (1:1,37) and widescreen (1:1,66 and 1:1,85) and all frame rates, with playback of Dolby Digital and electronic projector for views on video and multimedia features. At the end of 2005 has undergone a renovation and was reopened in March 2006 with the quality of projection and sound reproduction within the international standards.
The Cinematheque Room / BNDES, with 210 seats and four wheelchair spaces, was officially opened on November 12, 2007. In this room it is possible to project films in sizes 35mm film and 16mm format silent - 1:1,33 - the cinemascope (1:2,35) going through the academy formats (1:1,37) and panoramic (1: 1.66 and 1:1,85) - and all frame rates. The sound reproduction can be either analog or Dolby Digital. Both rooms offer features that enable the display of the wide variety of material contained in the collection of Brazilian Cinema and other institutions preserving audiovisual memory, national and international, as well as film screenings with current production in film and / or analog media and digital.
Moving images
The Brazilian Cinema owns the largest collection of moving images of Latin America. It consists of about 200 thousand rolls of film, corresponding to 30 000 titles. They are works of fiction, documentaries, newsreels, commercials and family records, domestic and foreign produced since 1895.
Films and videos are incorporated into the Brazilian Cinema by depositing the donation and legal deposit. The deposition of films and other media is governed by the Deposit Agreement.
