The Cape St. Roque is actually the closest point in all of South America to the African continent.  Some writings describe this place as the most likely place the Portuguese fleet of "Pedro Alvares Cabral" first anchored.   At Cabo de São Roque Beach, there are two Gameleira trees which have been joined together by the force of the wind and almost formed a single unique tree.  The popular name of the tree is the tree of love and the natives say that if a couple kisses under the arch of tree trunks, that they will never separate.  A kiosk that has been installed next to the tree offers drinks and locally produced products.

 

The lighthouse of Cabo de São Roque, built in 1898 is 32 meters high and is a major attraction to the area because of the great panoramic view it offers tourists.  One of the most beautiful views of the beach of Ponta Gorda is viewable from here, which is protected from the strong waves and winds in the area.   

 

The area is great for diving and fishing, but due to the high winds and strong waves not as suitable for swimming.   The beach is roughly 55 km from Natal and in vicinity of the city of Maxaranguape.
