It started around 1854, when a movement of people connected to the culture became aware that Desterro, the capital of the province, deserved a large, modern theater. This little prologue served to the unfolding of many acts opposite where politicians, investors, journalists, people and even the president of the province. Finally, on July 29, 1857 was laid the foundation stone of the new theater.

They began the plots. Only on 5 June 1871 is that the Santa Isabel Theatre, honoring the Princess Elizabeth, was used, even without being completed. And the official inauguration took place on September 7, 1875, calculated with the presence of over a thousand people. A success.

The marches and counter-politics always influenced the progress of conservation work and improvements. And there were many complaints because of the lighting, chairs, smoke cigarettes, excessive heat in the audience. Everything was subject to extensive discussions of the people in general. Recalling that the theater was the venue, entertainment and culture for excellence in those times.

And so, the divergence of views and interests, the theater underwent a period of abandonment, even when served as a prison. Yet it was felt time for a resolution on 2 July 1894, changed its name to Teatro Álvaro de Carvalho, a homage to the first playwright of Santa Catarina. Shortly before the move, on May 17, Desterro renamed to Florianopolis.

Meanwhile, new battles followed to make the theater of ostracism and put it back under the spotlight. Until the film, which then crawled, tried to steal the show and it was installed. Around 1899 is that resources were applied to recovery of major consequence of what one could still call the theater. Thus, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, Teatro Álvaro de Carvalho entered the twentieth century.

In 1955, another great effort has imposed a radical transformation to the theater, but not before a hypothetical curtains are closed forever, and the building demolished.

The truth is that little remains of the ancient structure. The reform followed the evolution of architecture and decoration, is seeking a fit between form and function. But the new century was not only a good character and, at times slip, took the stage to movies, dances, conferences, stunts, speeches and all sorts of misrepresentations of his particular purpose. Was difficult to bring back the theater, dance and music, which play major roles today.

Between construction and opening, abandonment and seasons, emotions and tears, Teatro Álvaro de Carvalho completed 100 years. Now occupies a prominent place not only as a piece of architecture but as a legitimate cultural heritage of all of Santa Catarina, deservedly fallen since 1988, under guard of the Santa Catarina Foundation of Culture. A site open to visitors and the most talented of the noble arts demonstrations.
