It is an important part of the World Biosphere Reserve. It also takes part of its territory Environmental Protection Areas - APA State Park of Serra do Mar, APA-Canaanite-Iguape Peruibe and Reserve and Interest Ecological Area of the Queimada Grande and Queimada Pequena Islands.
The Juréia Itatins is one of the last reserves of Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Landscapes of breathtaking beauty house of rare ecosystems integrity. Declared Unit Conservation Station in 1987 protects about 80,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest and associated ecosystems such as reefs, mangroves, river plains, beaches, hilltop vegetation and rocky shores. Between the two mountain ranges Pogoçã Peak, in Juréia and God´s Peak in Itatins, a coastal plain with very dense drainage forms the basins of the Una do Prelado River and Verde River. The Station different environments with rich flora also house a diverse fauna, with endangered species such as tapirs, guans, hawk-dove, jaguars, pumas, ocelots, parrots, purple-faced, and mono-charcoal howler monkeys. The population also live in that environment, side by side with nature.
