Description: Praça XV de Novembro - Florianópolis
The most important square in Florianópolis is a great place to stroll, relax and breathe fresh air. The Praça XV de Novembro (November XV square), or popularly known as "Figueira Square," houses the famous century-old fig tree, obviously.
The square has many attractions like its petit dessert style flooring reproducing a drawing with island folklore motifs, designed by artist Hassis, the Monument in Honor of the Dead Heroes of Paraguay War and busts that commemorate Santa Catarina´s most famous: Cruz e Sousa, poet, Victor Meirelles, painter, José Boiteux, historian, and Jerônimo Coelho, founder of the press in the State. However, the main attraction is, undoubtedly, the huge plant with more than one hundred years! With all these years of life, the centennial Figueira came to a weight greater than expected and had to receive support for its huge and heavy branches.
The square´s biggest attraction renowned giant is about 140 years old and is planted in the square for 120 years. They are 51.100 days of survival which fascinates all people who visit it. There are many commentaries on the Figueira. Some say that the tree is impressive, others say it is a mass of tree, and others are full of praise for the tree. Some are surprised that the Figueira has been replanted, as it is said that she was born in 1871 in a garden that existed in front of the Church and was transplanted to its present place in 1891. Tourists say they want to visit Florianópolis only to know the tree. The illustrious Figueira is so remarkable and important to the city, that there is even a football team named after it: "Figueirense Futebol Club". Some believe that you must walk around it several times to attract marriage and richness. Well, it is worth a try!
It was from the Praça XV de Novembro that the city began to expand, with its narrow streets bordering the beach. Until today the roads are kept in the original historic center, with streets João Pinto, Tiradentes, Víctor Meirelles, Fernando Machado, Anita Garibalde, Saldanha Marinho, Nunes Machado, Antônio Luz and Travessa (lane) Ratcliff to the east and the streets Francisco Tolentino, Conselheiro Mafra, Felipe Schmidt, Trajano, Deodoro, Jerônimo Coelho, Sete de Setembro, Álvaro de Carvalho, Pedro Ivo and Padre Roma to the west. This area has a large amount of historic buildings, which have the original architectural features preserved by law.
