The monument
Considered the jewel seventeenth century architecture, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Gloria do Outeiro is one of the greatest assets of Colonial architecture Brazilian religious. Built in the middle of the churchyard, consists of two octagons irregular, elongated and interconnected, preceded by a square base of the bell tower, which serves as its foot porch.
Historiography records controversy regarding the authorship and date of the final construction of the temple. But the most accepted version, is that the works date from the second half of the eighteenth century (around 1714) and were entrusted to the architect and engineer, Lieutenant Colonel Jose Cardoso de Ramalho, appointed by King John V to the rank of Captain of Infantry of the Captaincy of Rio de Janeiro. Was completed in 1739.
The ornate wood carvings are on the high altar, the nave altars, pulpits and choir, and represent the transition between the end of the Rococo and Neoclassical.
The temple is adorned with painted tiles, including the nave, chancel, aisles, vestry and choir. According to the interpretation of Peter Frei Sinzig, the panels represent scenes inspired by the Bible, the Book of Tobit. " However, Professor Santos Simões says are inspired by the "Song of Songs," except for the tiles of the vestry, representing hunting scenes.
Its authorship is attributed to Mestre Valentim de Almeida, an exponent of Johannine tiles and form one of the most important sets of Brazil.
